What is Desktop as a Service (DaaS)?

Desktop as a Service is the cloud delivery model where a full desktop runs on managed compute and is streamed to you over the network. This guide explains what DaaS is, how it works, how it relates to VDI and remote desktop, what it costs, and how to tell whether a browser-delivered cloud desktop is the right DaaS model for your team.

The short answer

Desktop as a Service (DaaS) means your desktop operating system runs on a provider's compute in a data centre, and you interact with it over the network from whatever device is in front of you. The provider owns the servers, the virtualisation layer, the streaming pipeline, and the patching of the hosting infrastructure. You get a desktop that is persistent, follows you between devices, and bills as a service rather than as a capital purchase.

The key shift from a local PC is that the compute and the data live in a region you choose, not on the device. The device becomes a viewport; the desktop is elsewhere and streamed to you. That is the entire model.

How DaaS works, step by step

DaaS vs. VDI vs. remote desktop

These three terms overlap but point at different ownership boundaries:

  • Remote desktop: a protocol for viewing and controlling a computer over the network. It is a technology, not a delivery model — you can remote-desktop into a PC under your desk or a server in a data centre.
  • VDI: virtualised desktops on infrastructure you own and operate. You run the hypervisor, license the broker, patch the images, and size for peak. It is DaaS's on-premises predecessor.
  • DaaS: the same virtualised-desktop concept, but the hosting layer is operated by a provider and billed as a service. You never touch the hypervisor or the broker.

What DaaS costs (and why the model matters)

DaaS pricing falls into two families, and which one a provider uses changes the economics dramatically:

  • Per-seat per month: a fixed price per user. This mirrors VDI's fixed cost and is predictable, but you pay the same whether the user works 4 hours or 40 hours a week. It overcharges light users and undercharges heavy ones.
  • Per compute-hour (metered): you pay for the time a session is actually active. This is cheaper the moment seat utilisation is variable — contractors, part-time roles, hybrid schedules, seasonal peaks — because idle desktops cost storage, not compute.

  • You need GPU compute for design, rendering, or engineering work, but not continuously enough to justify owning GPU hardware.
  • Your endpoint policy favours keeping data off devices — a streamed DaaS desktop never writes data to the local device.

When DaaS is not the right choice

  • Air-gapped or strictly on-premises requirements where compute cannot leave a facility you control. DaaS places compute in a provider region.
  • A single fixed workload on a dedicated workstation that runs 24/7 — a local workstation or owned VDI may be cheaper at very high, very steady utilisation.
  • Environments where the network path is too unreliable for a streamed session and there is no option to place a region nearby.

Most DaaS products require a client application on each endpoint.
